Mirror Ball Buying Guide

✨ The Ultimate Mirror Ball Guide – Sizes from 5 cm to 200 cm

Everything you need to know about choosing, installing, and enjoying your mirror ball. From ceiling heights to pinspots, motors to materials – this guide covers it all.

Choosing the Right Size

Mirror balls are measured by their diameter – the distance straight across the middle of the ball.

What size mirror ball do I need?

It depends on your ceiling height. A standard room is 2.4 m high – here, a 30 cm ball is a great starting point. Over a kitchen island, you could go for 40 cm. If you have higher ceilings, you can go bigger for a true impact piece.

Ceiling Height vs Ball Size

  • 2.4 m (standard ceiling): 30–40 cm ball
  • 3 m ceiling: 50–60 cm ball
  • 4 m ceiling: 75 cm ball or larger

Installation & Safety

Ceiling height and drop are more important than room size. Always ensure:

  • The mounting point can hold at least 10x the total weight.
  • Chain length does not exceed 100 cm.
  • The motor is correctly rated for the ball size.
  • A safety chain is installed as backup.

Can the motor be mounted on a vaulted ceiling?

Yes – up to 30° tilt is fine in our experience.

Lighting & Pinspots

How many pinspots do I need?

  • 30 cm and smaller: 1 pinspot
  • 40–60 cm: 2 pinspots
  • 75 cm and above: 4 pinspots

  • 50CM and under: blown plastic – lightweight, safe, and strong.
  • 60 cm and above: fibreglass – designed to handle the extra weight of larger balls.

Tile Facet Sizes

  • 5 mm facets – finer reflections, more sparkle (ideal for weddings and photography).
  • 10 mm facets – bigger, bolder beams (ideal for clubs and large venues).

Outdoor Use

While mirror balls are not weatherproof, many customers and even our own team members have mirror balls in their gardens all year round. They will still create an amazing effect outdoors – just keep in mind they may age faster when exposed to the elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add chain to the motor so the ball hangs lower?

Yes – but always consider the weight of both the ball and the chain, and make sure your chosen motor can support the total load safely.

Can I use a mirror ball outdoors?

Yes, but only with weatherproof motors and under cover. The ball itself should not be left exposed to heavy rain or strong wind. (Checkout our blog on How Outdoor Conditions Affect Mirror Balls).

Do you supply everything I need?

Yes – we supply motors, safety chains, lighting, and accessories for a complete setup.

What makes your mirror balls different?

We use blown plastic (under 60 cm) and fibreglass (60 cm and above) cores, precision glass tiles with minimal gaps, and strong construction for maximum sparkle and safety.
